These two verses from the Bible are meaningful to me on this day:
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
If you know me, you know the whole “obey” thing is hard. However, I do my best to honor my parents. My mom raised me in a single-parent household from the age of two. She did the best she could with the little support she received, both monetarily and emotionally. It was visibly hard for her, but as an adult, I understand and appreciate more and more just how hard it was. And even though I struggle at times with how to best look after my mom, when I have the opportunity to bless her in some way, I do. I will always do my best (with God’s help and blessings) to be sure she has a roof over her head and that her needs met. I pray God continues to allow me to bless her.
2 Timothy 1:5
I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
This verse is important, because without my Grandmother S’s decision, as an adult, to follow God, I would not be in the position to reap the rewards of her legacy of faith. Often, I thank God for her and my mom’s faith in Him. Their faith has led to my own salvation and relationship with God. Without that, I’d be in a world of trouble…in so many ways. I have strayed from God on more than one occasion. I know their quiet prayers and strong faith in God kept Him holding on to me.
I hope that I will someday be able to provide a legacy of faith.
