G4 is planning a reality show focused on an U.S. Navy EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) unit in Afghanistan.
The show will cover the unit’s training sessions in the States and its deployment for several months in Afghanistan.
“There is simply no way to comprehend the incredible amount of pressure and split-second decisionmaking these individuals must undertake in the worst possible physical conditions without riding along with them as our cameras will do,” G4 president Neal Tiles said. “This is a rare opportunity to showcase the work of the courageous men and women on the front lines and share with our viewers all the real-life drama, teamwork, danger and triumph that goes along with this specialized job.”
I’m not sure how I feel about this. I like that we get to see what our troops do, as I truly believe part of the problem with this country is that so many people are absolutely clueless about the military and make broad generalizations about it.
I just hope no one is placed in a bad light or in danger because of this decision.
Showing BUDS on the Military Channel is one thing. Producing a reality show in a combat zone is not on my list of wise ideas. I wasn’t all that happy with embedded reporters, either.
War is not a show and should not be reduced to a romantic notion.
There is a time and place for the recording of the events. Not sure a reality show fits that requirement.
